Windows occupies half of the server market

According to market research firm IDC statistics, demand for Windows and Linux servers has grown strongly, at the cost of plunging demand for Unix servers and other non-x86 servers.

IDC said: "Because of the growth of the x86 server market, Microsoft's Windows server demand was very strong in the second quarter of 2010, compared with the same period last year, its hardware revenue increased by 6.7%, and shipments increased by 28.2%." Windows-based The server’s quarterly revenue was 5 billion U.S. dollars, which accounted for 46.5% of the total server revenue of the world, and it almost took half of the total.

Linux-based server revenue increased by 30.1% to a total of $1.8 billion. IDC pointed out: "Linux servers account for 16.8% of overall server revenue, up 2.5 percentage points from the second quarter of last year."

Overall, server sales have made great strides since 2003. Revenues have increased by 11%, server sales have increased by 24%, and the largest demand is still x86 servers.

In the second quarter of this year, Unix server revenues fell 7.3% compared to the same period last year. Non-x86 server quarterly revenue fell 16%, with total revenue of $3.9 billion.

From the perspective of system vendors, Hewlett-Packard topped $3.5 billion in quarterly revenue; followed by IBM with $3.2 billion in revenue; and third was Dell ($1.7 billion).
